After the pandemic forced its absence the BVMA will once again be hosting a conference this autumn, in beautiful Halsway Manor in Somerset, on the weekend of 15/16th October 2022.
British Violin Making Association 2019 Oxford Conference: Early Violin Making in Northern Europe, 1560-1725. This year’s conference brings together experts on the seventeenth-century Northern European schools of making from around the continent, and celebrates the interrelationships and stylistic commonalities that exist between French, Dutch, British, Flemish and Belgian makers. Taking place at the usual venue of the Catholic Chaplaincy in Oxford, the two day event will include round table discussions and an informal exhibition of instruments.
Featuring lectures, luthier’s market, lunch and an evening concert.
The Messiah 301 Conference followed the tercentenary homecoming to Cremona of Stradivari’s fabled violin, the Messiah of 1716. It was already the object of myth and speculation before it emerged into public view with Vuillaume’s purchase of the violin in 1854, and mythology has surrounded it ever since.
To mark the publication of the Hill Bow Makers 1880-1950 by Derek Wilson and John Milnes, the BVMA hosted a study day at Oxford in collaboration with the Ashmolean Museum and the Bate Collection of Musical Instruments, where Arthur Bultitude’s bow making tools are preserved.
