Set-up course with Andrew Fairfax and Kathrin Hügel

  • Halsway Manor Somerset England (map)

The third edition of our set-up course at Halsway Manor in Somerset, for violin makers at the beginning of their careers. During the week at Halsway we will concentrate on the set-up of a violin, particularly the sound post and bridge. Andrew Fairfax and Kathrin Hügel will talk you through every step before applying the theory in practice. At the end of the week, participants will leave with a step-by-step plan on how to do a bridge and sound post.

Our aim is to give an overview of all the important aspects of a professional set-up. This will contribute to make the instrument sound as good as it can without a compromise in comfort for the player.

There is space for 12 participants on this course. Express an interest in participating HERE

Those signing up, should have finished at least their second year at a violin making college (at the time of the course) or have a similar level of experience. They must bring their own violin to work on alongside their tools.

Some bridges, sound posts and other accessories will be sponsored.

The course fee is £750-800 depending on choice of room, this includes teaching, accommodation and food.

Last year’s course was heavily subsidised for all participants. The 2024 course will be more expensive, but bursaries are available from the BVMA covering half the cost of the course. These will be prioritised to help people in the early stage of their career and are available to those paying the full cost of the course themselves. They are not intended for those whose employers are funding them.

If you would like to be considered for a bursary, please express interest in the course via courses@bvma.org.uk by 15/02/2024 with up to 500 words outlining your experience, why you would like to attend and what you hope to get out of the course; including 3-6 pictures of your work.
